Some of the stellar comments this fortnight…

Q: Students lead in U:PASS for a wide variety of reasons – to mentor, to gain leadership skills, to improve communication skills, to get educational experience, to see what it’s like working for UTS.  What’s something you feel you have gained in one (or more) of these areas over the last fortnight? Why? (You may also choose another area if you wish!) 🙂

A: I’ve definitely noticed that I am more comfortable with speaking in front of a bunch of strangers now, as opposed to say a year ago. I actually realised this when I was doing an Orientation event about professional identity for UTS Careers, where I was meant to speak in front of 800 students for 15 minutes or so. Even though I was only on stage for such a short amount of time, I didn’t get too nervous about it and I definitely don’t think I would have done what I did if it was a year ago! Although this is not an area that developed over the last fortnight, rather it is an accumulation of the numerous sessions I had led last semester, I definitely think that U:PASS has given me the opportunity to improve my communication skills and build on my existing leadership skills as well.

A: Mentoring abilities and leadership skills. I never expected this to be this rewarding. It gives me immense pleasure to help students and even greater pleasure when i see that my work is really helping them. I had a few students come up to me and tell me that it was a great session and that they wanted to keep coming. That for me was priceless.

 This fortnight i also got a reaaaaaallll good taste of what it is like to be a ‘teacher’ in regards to the preparation that is required as well as classroom management. I am slowly learning how to structure my lessons and how to prepare them (eg. where i can find valuable information, and how much content is manageable within an hour). On top of that I have had to master the art of getting everyone to shut up after a group activity ends and they need to present to the class, therefore requiring silence. “OI!” sounded too bogan and “excuse me guys” was too soft and didnt get their attention. I now just clap to get their attention and begin talking. Because they all want to get as much information out of the sessions as they can, they all go quiet. and listen to instructions. yay 🙂

A: Before the session or after the session, I usually have a chat with a few students.

When I give them helpful tips for a uni life, I feel I am useful person for someone. This makes me feel really happy.

Also for educational experience, as I meet different level of students, I consider different ways to help them effectively. Thus everyweek I try slightly different way of learning materials.

Lastly, I am glad to make many new friends. As U:PASS has a friendly environment, we can have a chat informally and we can interact more actively each other.

 

Q: Other comments:

A: I really love helping other students.

As an international student, when I had to start all studying myself I was lonely and stressed.

The reason that I start U:PASS was for other students not to have been through same hard time like me.

Although I cannot help whole part of their study, at least I can assist with some parts I am glad.

A: Mentor skill, leadership skill, communication skill, educational experience skill, in-depth C++ knowledge skills and confidence skills. A lots … cannot count.
